A single threat in Connect Four never wins against an opponent who is paying attention. You line up three, they block the fourth square, and you have spent a move to gain nothing. Every game that ends in a win ends because someone built two threats that share a move โ and the opponent could only block one.
That is the fork, and it is the whole of Connect Four tactics. The rule that makes forks possible
A disc always lands on the lowest empty square of a column. So the moment you place one, you make the square directly above it legal โ and you hand that square to whoever moves next.
Every fork exploits this. You are not really trying to occupy two winning squares; you are trying to reach a position where every column your opponent can legally play either completes a line for you or opens the square that does. Their options are seven at most, and each one is attached to a square you can see in advance.
Seven is a small enough number to check exhaustively, and checking it is the single habit that separates players who win Connect Four deliberately from players who win it by accident. Before your move, walk the seven columns and name what each one gives away. It takes under a minute and it turns the fork from something you stumble into something you build.
Note the control here: you click the exact landing square, not the column. On an empty column that is the bottom row; otherwise it is the square immediately above the top disc. Clicking elsewhere returns a can't go here message.
The two-gap row
The simplest fork. You hold three discs in a row with an empty square at each end, both of them playable โ for example discs in columns 3, 4 and 5 of the bottom row, with the bottom squares of columns 2 and 6 still open.
Your opponent can block one end. You take the other. The block is worthless because there were two winning squares and only one move available to stop them.
Getting there requires that neither end square be sitting on top of an empty column, which on the bottom row is automatic. Higher up it is not โ an end square is only a threat if the square below it is already filled, otherwise your opponent simply does not play there and the threat never activates.
This is the most common way a two-gap row fails in Connect Four. The shape looks finished, both ends are empty, and neither end is reachable because the columns beneath them are hollow. A threat that cannot be played this turn is not a threat; it is a plan, and your opponent gets to move in between.
The vertical-and-diagonal fork
The more common fork in real games, because it is harder to see. You have three discs stacked in a column and three on a diagonal, and both lines need the same column but at different heights โ or two different columns that your opponent cannot cover with one move.
Diagonals are the reason this works. There are 24 diagonal lines among the 69, against 24 horizontal and 21 vertical, and diagonals are the ones players stop scanning for. A diagonal threat is often completed by a disc the opponent is forced to place for an unrelated reason, which is what makes the fork feel like a trap rather than a race.
Practical version: build your diagonal so that its missing square sits directly above a square your opponent will be pushed into playing. When they take the lower square, they open your winner.
The 7
The named shape most people meet first. Three discs along a row and a fourth above one end โ the shape of a digit 7, or its mirror. It produces a horizontal threat and a diagonal threat that intersect awkwardly for the defender, and it is built naturally out of the centre columns.
What makes the 7 strong is not the shape itself but where it sits. Built through columns 3, 4 and 5 it draws on the three columns that carry 39, 51 and 39 of the 69 winning lines respectively. Built out on the walls, the same shape draws on columns worth 15 lines and usually threatens nothing at all.
Parity: who gets which square
If both players simply fill columns without deviating, the squares in each column alternate between them in a fixed order. The first player takes the first, third and fifth disc in a column; the second player takes the second, fourth and sixth. That is the parity rule, and it decides who reaches a threat square when a column fills naturally.
The practical form: if you moved first, threats that sit at an odd height in their column tend to fall to you; if you moved second, even heights favour you. A threat on the wrong parity can be waited out โ your opponent never has to open it, because opening it would be self-destruction.
Counting the board's 69 lines by the height of the last square each one needs gives the distribution:

Two readings matter. First, 57 of the 69 lines are only completed at height 4 or above โ most of the board's winning potential lives in the upper half of the stacks, which is why games rarely end early. Second, 42 of the 69 close on an even height against 27 on an odd height, so the second player has slightly more of the board naturally aligned to their parity. The first player's compensation is the tempo of moving first, which is what the solved analysis of the game turns into a win when the opening is the centre column.
Zugzwang: winning by leaving them nothing
The endgame version of the fork is subtler. Instead of two winning squares, you create a board where every remaining column is poisoned for your opponent โ each one opens a square that completes a line for you.
They are not blocked, they are simply out of harmless moves, and they must play something. This is why counting safe columns matters late in a game. Before you place a disc, count how many columns remain harmless for each side. If you have three and they have one, you can afford to wait and they cannot.
Filling a column to the top removes it from play entirely, which is sometimes the strongest move on the board: it takes one safe option away from an opponent who was relying on it.
Late in a game of Connect Four the seven columns typically reduce to two or three that are still legal, and the outcome is usually decided by who runs out of harmless ones first. Counting them is not an advanced technique โ it is arithmetic โ but almost nobody does it, which is why so many close games turn on a move that had no good alternative.
Defending against a fork
Three habits stop most forks before they form:
Block the square that serves two lines. When you must block, look for the blocking square that also sits on a line your opponent is building elsewhere. Blocking with purpose beats blocking reactively.
Never open a square you cannot afford. Before playing a column, check what the square immediately above your disc completes for the other side. If it completes anything, choose a different column and force them to open it themselves.
Break the shape early. A fork is easy to prevent while it is two discs and impossible once it is three-and-three. When you see three of your opponent's discs forming a right angle or a shallow diagonal through the centre columns, spend a move on it then, not later.
Two quirks to agree on first
This version keeps accepting discs after a win is declared โ the message appears but the board does not lock โ so decide with your opponent that the first message ends the game. There is also no draw detection: a full board with no message is a draw, and no reset button, so a new game means reloading the page.
