This rule is a starting framework, not a complete solution on its own. It works reliably in simple mazes, but you need to understand exactly where it breaks down before you rely on it completely.

Know When the Hand-on-Wall Rule Fails

The hand-on-wall rule only guarantees a solution in a "simply connected" maze, meaning a maze where every wall structure is connected to the outer boundary with no isolated wall islands floating in the middle. If a maze contains a wall structure that is not connected to the outer boundary, tracing that structure with your hand can trap you in an endless loop that never reaches the exit.

This matters directly in Maze Runner, because more complex layouts often include exactly these disconnected wall islands specifically to defeat a pure wall-following approach. If you notice you have returned to a spot you already passed through while still touching the same wall, that is your signal the simple rule has failed for this particular structure.

When that happens, do not keep repeating the same loop expecting a different result. Break off the wall-following approach at that point and switch to the marking and dead-end techniques described below.

Search for Dead Ends Systematically

A more advanced technique than simple wall-following is dead-end filling: treat any corridor that terminates in a single dead end as effectively a wall and mentally remove it from consideration. Once you do this across the whole maze, in your head or by tracing it out, everything that remains is either the solution path or connected loops.

Apply this technique from memory as you explore rather than trying to see the whole maze at once. Every time you hit a dead end in Maze Runner, mentally cross off that entire branch back to its nearest junction, since you now know with certainty that branch does not lead to the exit.

Combine this with your bifurcation marks: a junction where every branch except one has been crossed off as a dead end is no longer a real decision point at all, it simply funnels you down the one remaining option.

Orient Yourself Using the Exit's Position

Whenever the exit is visible on screen, even from a distance, use its relative position as a constant heading rather than exploring in a direction-agnostic way. If the exit sits to the upper right of your current position, prioritize junctions and turns that move you generally upward and rightward over ones that move you further away.

This is not a replacement for the wall-following or dead-end techniques, it is a tiebreaker. When a junction offers two untried directions and you have no other information to prefer one over the other, choose whichever one moves you closer to the exit's general direction.

Be careful not to over-rely on this heading alone, since many maze layouts deliberately route the correct path away from the exit before looping back toward it. Use direction as a tiebreaker among equally untested options, not as a rule that overrides your systematic marking.

Escape a Maze That Contains Loops

A maze with loops, meaning more than one path connects two given points, breaks the guarantee of the simple wall-following rule entirely, since a hand kept on one wall can trace an entire loop and return to its starting point without ever finding the exit. Recognizing a loop is the first step: if you return to a junction you have already marked without having reached a dead end first, you are on a loop.

Once you identify a loop, switch strategy completely. Instead of continuing to follow the wall, go back to the last junction that still had an unmarked, untried direction and take that direction instead, treating the loop you just traced as fully explored and irrelevant going forward.

Loops are exactly why the marking system matters more than the wall-following rule in complex mazes. A player without marks has no way to distinguish "I am on a new path" from "I am repeating a loop I already tried," while a player with consistent marks recognizes the repeat immediately.

Build a Mental or Physical Trail Map

For longer or more complex mazes in Maze Runner, keep an ongoing trail map of the path you have taken, either mentally or by tracking your last several turns explicitly. This trail is what makes accurate backtracking possible, since without it you know you need to go back but not precisely how far or which turns to reverse.

Update your trail map at every junction, not just at dead ends. A trail map that is only updated when something goes wrong is unreliable exactly when you need it most, during a fast backtrack under time pressure.
